Retaining cables / ball chains
Retaining cables and ball chains are used to secure components. They are available with a loop or key ring.
Captive links - how ball chains and retaining cables secure standard parts in the industry
Retaining cables and ball chains are terms used in the industry for securing operating parts. Both operating parts are important elements for occupational safety and protection of employees, equipment as well as products in industrial environments. They are used to fulfil different purposes related to safety, handling of standard parts and loss prevention .
The parts are used to secure items such as ball lock pins or locking pins. They ensures that these parts are not lost during operation or transport and can fulfil their function properly.
The use of ball chains and retaining cables also helps to improve work safety. They prevent objects, tools or components from being dropped, which is particularly important in industrial environments. Securing these parts prevents the loss of important and expensive tools or other standard parts. They help to prevent production losses that could result from the loss of individual components.
Adaptability of these operating parts rounds off their profile. The cable, for example, is available in various lengths and styles. To meet specific requirements, the stainless steel ball chain is also available in various lengths and styles.
Altogether, retaining cables and ball chains help to improve safety in the workplace, increase efficiency on site and ensure compliance with safety standards - especially when it comes to securing movable or transported parts in industry.

What is a retaining cable?
Retaining cables in the industrial context are special stainless steel cablesthat secure standard parts. The cable is meant to stop objects from becoming loose or dropping off a surface, especially in environments where securing standard parts is crucial. Retaining cables are available in different lengths and styles to meet the specific requirements of different applications. They are often fitted with eyelets or key rings to ensure secure fastening.
Retaining cables by KIPP are made from stainless steel. This allows for them to be used at temperatures of up to + 80 °C. The clip and crimp terminal are made of aluminium.
KIPP manufactures retaining cables in three styles. When ordering, you are able to select the style you require.
- Form A – with eyelet and crimp terminal
- Form B – crimp terminal on both ends
- Form C – eyelet on both ends
Each of the three styles is available in a lengths of 150, 200, 300, and 500 mm .
What is a ball chain?
A ball chain is a tether consisting of interconnected balls and secures objects so that they cannot be lost or misplaced. The chains offer flexibility and freedom of movement while providing reliability. In industrial environments, ball chains are often used with key rings to tether ball lock pins or locking pins. The combination of ball chain and key ring ensures that the pins are securely anchored and cannot be accidentally lost or misplaced.
Ball chains by KIPP are made of stainless steel and are available in two styles:
- Form A – simple ball chain
- Form B – ball chain with key ring
Both types are available in different length such as 160, 320, 500, und 1000 mm . If no length is specified when ordering, the ball chain will be delivered with a length of 1000 mm.
Be it with eyelets or key rings, ball chains offer additional application versatility as they can be easily attached to different fastening points. Safety precautions play a crucial role in securing fixture parts and other objects in various industrial sectors.
Retaining cables and ball chains in the KIPP range
In addition to retaining cables and ball chains, this category includes two other products. Namely key rings and safety spiral cables.
A combination of retaining cables or ball chains and a key ring is often used in industrial applications to tether ball lock pins and locking pins.
Key rings fit in the loops of retaining cables or into holes in the grips of ball lock pins, locking pins or indexing plungers. They come in different thicknesses (D1) and in various diameters . The desired size can be easily selected when ordering. They are all bright and made of stainless steel 1.4310.
Safety spiral cables consist of three parts.
- the spiral cable made of PUR
- an eyelet made of either copper or stainless steel
- and key rings made of either steel or stainless steel
The spiral cable is elastic and ideal for tethering fixture components. It is robust, wear resistant and has a very good restoring force.
These materials can be selected individually. Cables are available in lengths of 100 and 200 mm .
Advantages of operating parts
The advantages of operating parts are obvious. In combination or individually, these items offer a practical solution for holding critical elements securely while enabling efficient operation.
The use of retaining cables and ball chains prevents important tools or components from being lost or misplaced. They help to prevent production downtimes, as sourcing and replacing lost or misplaced parts costs time and resources. Retaining cables and ball chains serve as captive tethering devices.
Securing components with retaining cables and ball chains enables more efficient working methods. Employees can be sure that fixture and other parts are secured and may easily be accessed without having to waste time looking for them.
Ball chains offer flexibility and freedom of movement so that the secured objects can still be used efficiently despite being tethered with a key ring.
Overall, retaining cables and ball chains help to improve safety in the workplace, increase efficiency and ensure compliance with safety standards. For this reason, and because there are countless possible combinations, they are indispensable in many industrial applications.
